Data for Urban Energy Planning (Task 2) officially starts 1st January 2025!

date: 18 November 2024

As one of the first initiatives of this newly established Cities TCP, the IEA Cities Task 2 “Data for Urban Energy Planning” will officially start on 1st January 2025. This task will support cities and municipalities in a field in which they are very familiar and have competencies, namely finance and decision-making capabilities: urban energy planning.

Task 2 will focus on urban energy planning covering many aspects such as data requirements, tools, methods, etc. Attention will be paid to how cities and municipalities can apply urban energy planning as an essential tool to enable the necessary change to ensure a high standard of living. The added value to cities and municipalities is that they will gain useful information and advice on how to shape the urban energy transition by collecting and analysing best practice examples worldwide.

International exchange between initiatives, research projects and frontrunners in this context will be highly important to leverage the effect of R&D resources, possible technology and skills transfer, training and capacity building. There is already great interest in participation in the Task from many countries including Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, Italy and Switzerland. The Task is led by AEE INTEC from Austria.

“I am really looking forward to starting up this task. Task 2 is a great opportunity to actively involve cities and municipalities in the latest developments and implementations happening all over the world right now and to support them on their way towards a sustainable energy supply for their citizens. We already have a strong, motivated team of partners and contributors and I am convinced that Task 2 will have a huge impact on decarbonising cities”
