IEA Cities TCP Task 2: Summary of the First Hybrid Working Meeting in Bilbao

date: 4 April 2025

The first hybrid working meeting of IEA Cities TCP Task 2 took place in Bilbao, bringing together international experts to advance urban energy transformation. Task 2 focuses on supporting cities in their sustainable energy transition by applying data-driven decision-making methods, municipal heat planning, and integrated energy strategies.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Aligning partner contributions with the defined subtask activities to ensure a structured and effective approach.
  • Prioritizing data needs, particularly for municipal heat planning, distinguishing essential information from supplementary data.
  • Developing fact sheets as key knowledge-sharing tools for cities. These will serve as initial communication materials and entry points for more detailed insights, with national contributions forming their foundation.
  • Enhancing collaboration with multipliers such as national and regional energy agencies and NGOs.
  • Supporting smaller municipalities in their energy transition efforts by tailoring solutions to their specific needs.
  • Exploring flexibility and resilience in urban energy systems, including cooling and sector integration.
  • Strengthening international cooperation, leveraging insights from (inter-)national initiatives and ongoing IEA projects.

Next Steps:

  • Interim online meeting: June 24, 2025, at 13:00 CEST; Meeting link: IEA Cities Task 2 interim online meeting
  • Fact sheet finalization and development of dissemination strategies
  • Preparation for the ExCo meeting in April 2025
  • Planning the next in-person working meeting, scheduled for Fall 2025 (most likely in Berlin)

We extend our gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions and a special thanks to Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea for hosting the event. The outcomes of this meeting will further guide our efforts in supporting cities through data-driven methodologies and strategic planning.
