IEA EGRD Workshop: Technologies and innovations for the climate-neutral city

date: 12-13 May 2025; Vienna (Austria) and online

On 12th and 13th May together with the IEA Experts Group for Research and Development (EGRD), and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI) TCP Cities organised a workshop entitled “Technologies and innovations for the climate-neutral city” focusing on how cities can achieve climate neutrality.

The discussions centered on key factors for R&D policies to foster technologies and systemic innovations for sustainable and resilient urban development. Experts from a wide range of disciplines—including EGRD members, social scientists, behavioural economists, RD&D programme managers, urban planners and local authorities—shared policy approaches, research priorities, and best practices, offering strategic insights as well as grounded, local perspectives from across Europe and Asia.

Conclusions drawn were that although many solutions for climate-neutral cities already exist,  effective collaboration between all levels of government, research institutions, and civil society is needed to scale-up these solutions. Aligning technology, governance, and social innovation remains essential to building cities that are not only climate-neutral but also resilient, liveable, and inclusive.
