Webinar Empowering urban energy transitions | 16th May 2024

Webinar launch event on 16th May 14.00 (Paris time) – Empowering urban energy transitions – Smart cities leading on climate action

Cities have an essential role to play in #tripling #renewable power capacity and #doubling the annual rate of #energy efficiency improvement, commitments agreed as part of the @COP28 UAE Consensus.

By 2050 cities are expected to host up to 70% of global population, compared to the current 56%.

As they expand, key challenges will need to be addressed:

    • 70% of cities are already exploring the negative impacts of extreme weather events that cause strain on people and grids
    • The shift towards electrification is likely to #triple peak electricity demand in cities by 2030
    • Without unlocking new #flexibility sources, annual grid investments are expected to significantly increase
    • In developing countries and emerging markets, cities growth has to match with universal electricity access targets

The latest @International Energy Agency (IEA)’s report explores the need of modernising and expanding power grids for sustainable urban energy futures and provide key recommendations for governments and municipalities.

How to finance the multiple benefit business case in cities? | 18th October 2023

How to finance the multiple benefit business case in cities?

    Location

    RAI, Amsterdam

    Description

During the event eight cases from cities and communities were presented. Useful input was gathered to help build a common language and understanding of the concepts of blended finance, multiple value cases, communities of practice and regeneration. Conclusions drawn were that underlying action research, empowerment of champions, as well as codification are needed to support “new” investors, stakeholders, placeholders and cities on topics including:

    • True pricing
    • Reversed tendering
    • Dealing with pains and gains of all stakeholders
    • Developing methodologies for multiple benefits gaining and blended finance
      • Regulation-free zones
      • Defining opportunity costs and optimised value case for energy communities in cities

Key to the task will be how multiple benefits cases can reduce integral risks.

    Goal

The main purpose of this Kick-off  event was to shape the agenda for Task 3.
